Oh that Roisin!  She makes the most adorable dresses.  Most recently this little beauty.

Picture kindly allowed by Dolly Clackett, with thanks.

Isn’t it glorious!

Blue and white and Eiffel Towers and flowers.  Just perfect.

eiffel fabric

As soon as I saw this dress I was off on the hunt on the interwebs, and within 15 minutes I’d tracked down the fabric and bought myself 2.5 metres. Shameless plagiarism, I know, but I couldn’t resist.

If you’d like to get your mitts on some, I ordered mine from The Fabric Frieze on eBay.  It’s the first time I’ve ordered from this seller so she’s an unknown quantity, but her response to emails today was super speedy, which I always think is a good sign.

It will kick start me into working through the Sew the Perfect Fit course on Craftsy. So it seems that the sewing gods have made the decision for me.

stpf

I will fit Version D of this dress at toile stage, as per the course…that’s the straight skirted version with sleeves.  It will mean that I have all the elements fitted for future reference.

V8766However, with the Eiffel fabric, I plan on making a hybrid of the sleeveless bodice from Version D and the full skirt from Version F.

V8766 flatsOf course, this will also kick-start me into action and into finally finishing the Knit to Flatter course.

knittoflatter

I’ve been procrastinating over the last few lessons of this course.  I’m at the tricky maths stage which includes a yarn substitution that is sending me into a bit of a tailspin.  I just need to bite the bullet and do the work.

I think the starting is the hardest part!

Wish me luck.

Free Fabric Friday

***Edited – it’s gone, folks.  But I have another piece for next week***

I do hope you’re all having a lovely Easter weekend.

You’ll remember that when I cleared down the stash recently I mentioned that I had a couple of pieces of fabric that I would definitely not be using, and which needed a new home

Homeless fabric is a crying shame!  This piece is sitting on a corner of my sewing table giving me pitiful glances and begging me to find someone who will love it and make it up into something pretty.

Who am I to deny fabric a chance at a new life?

So, up for grabs is this lovely print:

IMG_6495_edited-1

Aubergine and cream print polyester with a slightly crepe-like texture. It has a lovely drape and some weight. There are 2 metres and it’s 150cm wide.

As I’ve done previously, I’ll send it anywhere in the world…all I’m asking is that you pay the postage. Just email me with your address, I’ll check the postage cost for you, and if that’s OK you can PayPal the postage to me and I’ll get it right out to you.

The early bird catches the worm, so if you’d like this, let me know…first commenter gets first dibs.

A girl can change her mind, right?

It would seem that my initial thoughts on a plan-free year were the ones I should have listened to. Whilst sorting though the fabrics and patterns rejuvenated my enthusiasm for sewing the stash, this was very short lived and my long standing stash related ennui has returned, with bells on.

I’m soooooooooooo bored of thinking and talking about it.  And it’s not even that big of a stash…it’s just a really, really annoying one.

This state of affairs has not been helped by sewing Button’s delightful Ruffle Tunic dress and The Husband’s shirt.  Both of these projects have been fun. Most importantly they’ve been projects I’ve wanted to sew, not projects I think I should sew.

Then I noticed that my Pinterest boards were throwing up trends for things that I like.  That I want to sew and want to wear.

Simple dresses in plain colours.  Or polka dots. Or stripes. (Ignore the fancy party dresses…I don’t go to that many fancy parties…but a girl can live in hope!)

Jeans and t-shirts.

Jeans and tunics.

Slim legged trousers and long line tops.

Maxi dresses…this one I don’t understand…I only bought my first maxi dress last year and now I want more.  I LOVE them!

Anyway…these are the things I want to wear…that fit in with my lifestyle at the moment…that flatter my figure (which is more than a little, shall we say, dynamic at the moment due to some changes in meds…one stone added in 4 months, eeek!).

All of this reflection has resulted in a small but somewhat rebellious thought percolating in my brain.

“What if, instead of sewing my stash, I just. got. rid. of it!”

Radical, no?

It seems so bloody ungrateful, though.  Much of my stash has been given to me by my lovely friend Liz.  All of the pieces are good quality fabrics. All of them will make fabulous garments.

But the crux of the matter is that what I would be sewing wouldn’t necessarily be stuff that I would immediately pull out of my wardrobe on a daily basis.  Or be in colours that I am naturally drawn to.

So this week I spoke with Liz and she was gracious about the whole thing. Which kind of gave me the green light.  An afternoon in the sewing loft and the stash was slashed in half, and a sense of lightness has returned.

I’m now down to:

  • some linens in green and black
  • some crinkle cotton
  • a couple of nice jerseys

IMG_6927_edited-1

  • a bit of lace
  • denim for a pair of jeans (which is currently being tortured in an attempt to soften it a bit before I start sewing)
  • tweed for an Anise jacket

Since Thursday I’ve printed off two PDF patterns, taped them together and started the process of flat pattern alterations.

I’ve made a toile for Amelie and it’s awaiting fitting.

AMELIA

And today I bought some lovely cotton lawn with which to line this gorgeous lace which is destined to become a Scout Woven Tee.

IMG_5525_edited-1

I’ve spent more time in the sewing loft this week than I have done for quite some considerable time.

So I’m binning the Stashbusting Sewalong and the Baker’s dozen project and going wherever the sewing mood takes me. Without a plan! 😉 Which at the moment is somewhere between the lace Scout Tee, a Washi maxi dress in crinkle cotton, and Amelie in black linen; all three of which I’m working on concurrently.

And it’s fun!

PS. I did photograph The Husband in his shirt this week.  He looked like an axe murderer in every pic.  I’ll do them again tomorrow.  Hopefully he’ll look less scary!

PPS.  There’s a couple of pieces of fabric that I’m not going to use that you might like.  I feel a giveaway coming up soon!

Such a creative post title!  One day soon I’ll actually have a finished project to show you…but not today!

IMG_0586_edited-1

The Husband’s Christmas shirt is slowly coming together….I’ve just front plackets, collar and stand, buttonholes and buttons to do.

Just!

I swear this is testing my abilities to the max and is full of creative “design features”! 😉

His birthday is in March and I’m determined to have it finished by then.

I’m even more motivated at the moment as I learned this week that I’ve won a copy of Sewaholic’s much loved, and much coveted, Renfrew from Miranda at One Little Minute, as part of her Stretch Yourself blog series.   It’s a really cool series of posts all about working with knit fabrics, and it’s really informative and user friendly.

I’m ridiculously excited at the prospect of finally having my own copy of Renfrew.  I’ probably the last sewist on the planet to actually make this, but I’m hoping it will be worth the wait.

renfrew

Much as I’m keen to start on the 13 dresses…my wardrobe is particularly sparse at the moment and I need some everyday, school run basics.  Renfrew will fit that bill perfectly with jeans and I already have 3 pieces of fabric in the stash that will be fantastic!

IMG_7097_edited-1

Ok…this is an odd photo because it’s heavily cropped, but it does show the three fabrics.  The one on the left is a heavy navy I bought from The Cloth House during my last visit to London…the green and brown prints are from my lovely friend Liz’s stash.

I think by the time I’ve made these three I’ll have ironed out any fitting issues with the pattern and will have a TNT t-shirt pattern that I can pretty much cut and sew.

I’m very excited about that prospect.  It’ll be my second TNT pattern…having already got a pretty well-fitting trouser pattern.  I’ve wanted to created a portfolio of TNT patterns for so long, I’m pinching myself that I’m finally making a start.

The Baker’s Dozen Dress Project has officially been sorted.

Stashbusting Sewalong Challenge Button with Text

I have all my patterns gathered into two crates and organised into some semblance of order.  Dress patterns with other dress patterns.  Blouses and tops all in the same section.  Ditto everything else.

When I’d finished corralling the patterns, I went to work on the fabric stash itself, pulled out every piece I could find and arranged that into separate piles of dress lengths, top lengths…you get the picture.

Can I tell you it was a huge amount of fun!  Which I’ll admit caught me unawares. Last year I’d been very jaded with the stash, but this new project brought me to the fabric piles with a new set of eyes.

With everything finally organised the real fun began.

Matching patterns to fabrics.

I’m 85% sure I’ve got it nailed.

So, here they are….13 dresses (almost):

There you go…almost 13 dresses.

What about the other 3?

Well, don’t forget the sublime butterfly fabric that Vicki sent me:

IMG_5373_edited-1

All the other fabrics were really easy to match to a pattern.  I think I was in the zone or something.  This one less so.  I tried a couple of ideas but I’m not entirely sold on either of them.  They’re both lovely patterns, but not right for this fabric, I think.

IMG_7089_edited-1I’m going to let this one percolate for a while and see how I feel.

And there’s also the beautiful voile that Hubby bought me for Christmas.

2 mtrs of Art Gallery Voile - Praline Honey

2 mtrs of Art Gallery Voile – Praline Honey

This one is destined to be a Miz Mozellemiz-mozelle-cover_1_1024x1024Buuuuuuut…I’m struggling with the amount of fabric.  Hubby once asked me how much fabric it would take to make a dress, and I said 2m.  Which would work if the fabric was 150cm wide…but this isn’t!  I should have clarified. Contrary to popular  my belief, he isn’t a mind reader. So I’m going to try and wiggle Miz Mozelle but may have to come up with a different plan for this lovely fabric.  Maybe, even, (whisper it) a blouse! (Which would be a lovely thing…all floaty and summery…but would interfere with this little project).

Yep.  I know you can count.  That’s only 12 dresses.  11 if the Miz Mozelle goes south.  But my secret weapon is the green linen.  There’s about 4 metres of that so I might be able to eke a second dress out of it.  There’s also acres of the black linen and the black crinkle.  I’ll work something out.

And if that fails…well, there’s always the fabric rabbits.  I’m sure they’ll come up with something between now and the end of the year.

rabbits-cute-group-of-land-13269

BTW…if you’re thinking “that’s not a lot of fabric, don’t know what the fuss is about” there is also 2 skirt lengths (actually one skirt length and one skirt cut out and sorrowfully awaiting further attention), 3 top lengths, 3 lengths of jersey for t-shirts, denim for a pair of jeans, silk for a slip, and tweed for an Anise jacket.  But they’re for another post!

The continuing saga of the ever-increasing stash

Dearest reader, I need your help.

I’m really rubbish at science.  So much so that I’m banned from teaching it to the children to prevent some tragic Jekyll and Hyde episode resulting from the contents of our kitchen.

jekyll

But even I know that fabric isn’t like rabbits and doesn’t reproduce at a great rate of knots.

Right?

Phew…thanks for clarifying that for me.

But then, I really can’t find any other explanation for the fact that despite having sewn quite a few garments last year, and some of them from my stash, it’s actually considerably larger than this time last year.

Or could it in fact all be down to my super generous friends who have been sorting out their stashes and sending my way anything they think I might like?

Or my lovely husband and his Christmas fabric buying antics?

Possibly even Vicki and Fiona conspiring to add more deliciousness to the mix.

IMG_6927_edited-1

Ooooooh….that would be it.  No scary and potentially hairy science required.

But, I do need to take matters in hand.

And I’m not alone.  Which makes me feel infinitely better about my complete inability to get a grip on this.

So I’m tentatively signing up to Cation Designs 2013 Stashbusting Sewalong.

Stashbusting Sewalong Challenge Button with Text

I can’t promise that new fabric won’t mysteriously make it’s way into the sewing loft this year.

And I’m pretty certain that the odd pattern or Burda magazine will sneak in there too.

But I’ve got lots of ideas for the fabric and patterns that I do have.  And lets face it, they’ll be far better in my wardrobe than up those stairs.

And the place will look less of a tip too.

Which would be rather nice all round.

Oh, Santa was good to me this year.

He knew my mojo was lying prostrate on the rug with a bottle of wine and a bag of liquorice allsorts.

So he brought me a pile of inspiration to kick Miss Mojo up the derrière and get her back at the needles and machine.

These books are definitely working their magic on me.

But Santa didn’t stop there….

This is from The Husband…isn’t he just the best?! It’s so beautiful…breathtakingly soft and such vibrant colours.

And Fiona from Diary of a Chain Stitcher, who was my partner in the Sew Very Merry Christmas Swap organised by Vicki, sent me the most sublime jersey in a very regal purple.

IMG_6927_edited-1

It has Tiramisu written all over it and I’m so thrilled with it.  Fiona really hit the nail on the head with this fabric…she has fabulous taste! Thank you so much, Fiona.

My head is buzzing with ideas of things I want to make.  A baker’s dozen of dresses.  The school run project.  Coats for me and Button.  Hats for The Husband and The Boy.  Quilts up the Wazoo!

I’m hoping to get a couple of UFO’s finished this weekend, and a bit of mending, and then the table will be clear for new sewing projects.

And first up will be…..

M6613

M6613

I’m not sure what fashion crack (thank you Tim Gunn)  they were smoking when they came up with this cover shot, but the line drawing shows a good basic shirt pattern:

M6613 (1)This is to be one of my Christmas gifts to The Husband.  I have the most fabulous navy/white gingham with coordinating stripe cotton from The Cloth House for him.  It’s a brave new world for me, shirt-making,  but I’ve been promising to sew for him for years and he’s feeling more than neglected!

So I’m hoping this will start to make it up to him.

Fingers crossed!

What fabric embargo?

So, as you know, I spent some time on Berwick Street on Saturday.  Which is my favourite place to shop for fabric…as you’re pretty much sure to find what you want as there are such great shops.

After visiting a couple of the ’boutique’ fabric shops (£140, and more, per metre, anyone?) I headed for the Cloth House.  Or, to be correct, the first of the two Cloth House shops on Berwick Street.

Having had the fabric embargo in place, and dutifully clearing out or sewing up quite a bit of the fabric this year, my mind is turning to what I’m going to do when I’m free to sew exactly what I want…which is to fill my wardrobe with stuff that I’ll wear on a daily basis. For me that means I need to start with at least one more pair of jeans and some t-shirts.  I have some other “collection” plans coming together, but this first plan will get me dressed and out of the door on the school run every day in something reasonably presentable.

So I bought basic fabrics.

First up delicious double jersey:

It’s slightly darker in real life…airforce blue heading towards navy.  But, oh, how soft and snuggly this is.

Maybe Santa will bring me Renfrew for Christmas (or I can buy it myself in the New Year).  Because I’m planning to make up several iterations of it to go with jeans.  throw on boots and a jacket (or raincoat 😉 ) and I’m good to go for school.

No fuss.

And the Cloth House has this stuff in every colour known to man.  And (Husband, avert your eyes) they’ll ship samples and fabric if you ask them.

So, obviously, I need to make some more jeans to fit this plan.  Enter Cloth House shop 2 and this fabulous denim:

Wonderful blue/black denim with a great cross hatching in the weave (for which I’m sure there is a technical name but of which I’m completely unaware).

This denim has some lycra but is far heavier and more substantial that the denim I used for my first pair of jeans.  I’m really hoping it will soften a little in the prewash stage (I’m assured it will) but would welcome any tips for speeding up that process if you’ve got them.

Now you won’t be seeing these sewn up for a little while.  I’m still killing the stash and life is cray-zie busy at the moment.  But they will be the first things on the table when the Autumn SWAP is completed…and I’ve been back at the sewing table this week so hopefully will have something to share very soon!

***Well, subject to postage not being extortionate, all the fabric has gone!  I’m so pleased that it has found new homes, and can’t wait to see what you make of it.***

My friend Liz called in at Chez Stitches yesterday for a coffee and so I could help her pin a pile of alterations for things she wants to wear on her annual holiday visiting her son in Australia at Christmas (how much fun is that?).

She never turns up without something she’s found in a drawer or at a charity shop that she thinks either I or the kids will love…I’ve got some lovely vintage kitchen pieces for which I’m eternally grateful.

Yesterday was no exception.  She brought a lovely pile of fabric from her stash…some of which I love…some of which isn’t really my thing.

But just because it’s not my thing…doesn’t mean it won’t be yours. With that in mind I thought I’d share on the off-chance there is something you like. This isn’t a giveaway per se.  I’m offering this on an “if you like it let me know and it’s yours” basis.

I’ll send it anywhere in the world, all I’m asking is that you pay the postage.  So there is anything you’d like just email me with your address, I’ll check the postage cost for you, if it’s OK then PayPal the money to me and I’ll get it right out to you.

Sorry, it’s gone!

Totally wish I could carry this but simply can’t.

I’ll leave this open until next Sunday (the 18th) and if they haven’t gone by then, I’ll send them to the charity shop.

Autumn SWAP – stashbusting with a plan!

29 Monday Oct 2012

After the lingering ennui of the last couple of weeks, Saturday was overtaken by a flurry of activity.  After the necessary household chores had been attended to (good grief, I detest ironing!), I attacked the sewing loft with gusto.

We’ve been sorting out rubbish up there for a few weeks, but it was all piled up at one end of the room, creating creeping claustrophobia. A few trips up and down the stairs lugging crates of crap gave me space to breathe again.

Next up the table.  Oddly, if you don’t have a pile of sewing books, every pair of scissors you own, spare sewing machines, several patterns, cut out garments, and a pile of scraps and cut threads on your sewing table, you can actually see the surface.  And find the things you are looking for. Who knew?

And as the clutter cleared my thoughts finally turned to sewing.  And my autumn Stashbusting With A Plan.

The first order of business was to sort the fabrics I’m actually going to sew with from the scraps and potential upcycling projects.  This done, I had a pile of bags ready for the charity shop and a clear view of what is available to me that I actually will, and want to, sew.

Next…divide into summer and winter fabrics.  I packed up the summer fabrics for next year without the faintest twinge of guilt that I’m not planning to sew them any time soon.

I think this surfeit of fabric in my stash, and my self imposed fabric embargo until it’s cleared, has been stifling my creativity.  I now know that I’m not a stash person.  I find it vaguely oppressive.  It becomes a “to-do” list rather than a joy. The spontaneity of sewing things you want to make at a particular time is restricted by the fabric you have in your stash. And my stash isn’t big enough to meet my random sewing impulses.  Also, as time passes my tastes and lifestyle have changed so that pieces become obsolete.

I do realise that I’m swimming against the tide with this and I really admire those amazing seamstresses who have spectacular stashes and “shop” them on a regular basis to make wonderful creations.  I’m just not that girl.

So with all this clearing and sorting done I was left with a pile of fabric divided into four piles, one for each member of the family.  And this is what I’m going to be making.

Button is in the most need…she’s growing like a weed at the moment.  So for her I’ve got 2 pairs of skinny jeans cut from old pairs of The Husband’s jeans:

An Oh Suzanna Smock from one of The Husband’s old shirts:

This is surely going to look better on her than it ever did on him…it had short sleeves and that is not a good look on him.

There’s a Heidi & Finn Cowl Neck Dress from a sweater dress from Ma SIL’s wardrobe:

And, of course, the fauxbury check dress.

The Boy has stacks of t-shirts but needs trousers.  Which he hates wearing.  As it’s really too cold for shorts now, I’m hoping this soft cord will change his mind:

I’ve been promising to make The Husband a waistcoat for almost as long as I’ve been promising to make him a pair of trousers.  Neither have materialised, so unless I can snaffle this lovely tweed (which is more Forest Green in real life but I couldn’t capture the colour on camera as the light is so grey today) for a skirt, I’ll be making it into a waistcoat for him this autumn:

This fabric is a classic example of how my taste in fabric changes.  I bought it and stashed it.  I then decided I didn’t like it and allocated it to a waistcoat for The Husband.  Now I’m thinking it would make a cute autumn skirt and his waistcoat would look better in a navy pinstripe fine wool suiting.

And finally, for me:

This marbled chocolate with latte coloured polka dots is going to be a simple top for layering under a cardigan.  I’m thinking I might try a Scout Tee for this. The fabric content is a mystery but it’s washable.  I know, it’s been prewashed!

This lovely aubergine with a cream leaf print is going to be another Washi…this time a dress.  Hopefully with the new longer length sleeve, if there’s enough fabric.

This is a textured polyester (which is much nicer than it sounds!) and has some weight.  It will be lined and styled with opaque tights and a cardi.

And last, but by no means least, is this swallow pattern fabric:

Again this is a heavy polyester, and I’ll admit I snuck this one past the fabric embargo about a month ago.  It’s from the dreaded Abakan, but was only £1.99 a metre.  I simply couldn’t leave it behind.  I’ve got 2 metres so I’m hoping for a shirt-dress  again lined, and layered with a cardigan and opaques.

Butterick 5600 – already in my pattern stash

I’m enthused to sew them pretty much all of these things.  The less inspiring items will be sewn first to get them out of the way.  Thankfully these are also the pieces for the kids. Hopefully I’ll whiz through these reasonable quickly.

As for the garments for me, well, I simply can’t wait to get them into the wardrobe and wear them.

And once I’m done I can start making a real plan for sewing to build myself the wardrobe of my dreams.

So…I’d better crack on, then!
