Last year I bought the Pendle Stitches domain name. And it has languished ever since. Which seems a bit mean, frankly. But I’m cautious about hosting services, as this is a completely Brave New World to little old technophobe me.
And then I realised. Lots of you guys have .com domains and might be able to give me some advise/recommendations regarding service providers.
Can you?
I’d be very grateful.
As would my lonely .com!
I can’t give any advice but I am interested to hear what others say. I want to get my own domain name too but haven’t for the same technophobe – or more aptly put, technolazy – reasons
I really have no excuse, as the husband is a whizz. It’s just deciding which hosting service to use, as there are so very many of them. A recommendation will be a good thing! Watch this space.
Hah, I’m less than useless for this I’m afraid. But interested in the answers too!
I’m hoping someone can recommend a great hosting service. I suspect a few posts about how I do the transfer wouldn’t go amiss! I may have to rope in the Mr…otherwise known in this house as Technical Help Desk. 😉
Hiyuh! I’ve used 123-reg for ages, since I was in university for various sites and for design clients too, with no complaints. It also super easy to set up domain forwarding (so your .com would link to this blog, if you liked) so it would at least be getting some action. ^_^
I shall check them out. Thanks for the tip.
I have been using BlueVoda’s VodaHost for many years and have been quite happy with their service. A couple years ago I was having problems with hackers and they took care of Everything. it was such a relief.
There is a bit of a learning curve, and a lot I don’t know, but I’ve had several different sites hosted on my one server over the years and have had no problems they couldn’t help me with. Their forums are great, too. You can check those out here: http://www.vodahost.com/vodatalk/
If you want to, you can use this link if you decide to sign up. It is an affiliate link. http://www.vodahost.com/partner/idevaffiliate.php?id=15511 I don’t actively promote them, but always highly recommend when asked because I’ve been so pleased with their service.
Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any questions.
Sorry, E. I’m so 1998 with my blogspot site.
Hilarious. I’m lucky that I have the help desk that is my husband…just that this is out of his sphere of experience. Crappity! 😉
I use fatcow for my self-hosting. Great because you don’t have space or bandwidth cap. I use WordPress for blog management. Email me if you need more info
oooooh…I shall check these out too. I shall shout if I need help. Thanks for sharing.

I think I bought mone through wordpress and it just all converted over – don’t rememebr it being tricky or a pain or anything but I’m not sure this will help you! Good luck 🙂
I’m going to need it. 😉
I’ve always used lcn.biz, for my dance website (www.beatricecurtis.co.uk if you’re interested). Lcn are all set up for wordpress users, you just need to ask for the correct hosting package.
My site’s entirely html based, so I don’t actually have any personal experience of them hosting a wordpress based site for me. A few months ago I was wondering about changing it to a wordpress site, and it looked as though it should be perfectly possible and easy, as you’re still using the same wordpress dashboard, so it would all be familiar to you. The only reason I haven’t changed over is that I would see that as the time to update and re-design the site, and that’s a job too far!
This is great info…thanks. I do need to do a redesign too which scares the bejesus out of me. I have no graphic design/coding skills at all. But I can always buy that stuff in. This is going to be a steep learning curve… 😉
You don’t need to be self-hosted to use your own domain — you just need the domain mapping function in WordPress. Here’s some info on mapping:

There may be other reasons you’re considering self-hosting, but if that’s the only one, then no need!
I shall check this out. Thanks for the link. I’ve some thinking and comparing to do before I make the leap.
I use Host Papa, only because they advertised as being Canadian, but I’m not sure if they are any good as all I ever do with them is backup my WordPress.org blog. I don’t know enough about technology to know better but if I could figure this out, so can you.
Brilliant…thanks. This is all new to me. Setting up the blog was easy…this is just a step outside my comfort zone. But I think it will be doable. *fingers crossed*
