As a child a Tunnocks Teacake was a Very Special Treat. The wondrously gaudy wrapper. Milk chocolate encasing stickily sweet marshmallow atop a crunchy biscuit base.
Good times.
As an adult…well, they’re something of a guilty pleasure!
Until now.
Thanks to The Great British Bake Off, Himmelbjerget has been tempted to try her hand at making her own, and today we celebrated the end of my degree with coffee and home made teacakes.
These are a decidedly grown up treat. Dark chocolate. Luscious meringue filling. Crisp but not overly sweet biscuit base.
To. Die. For!
Obviously there is no elegant way to eat this and you end up looking like a 4 year old with chocolate and meringue all over your hands and face.
But who cares!
Now, if she could only crack Caramel Wafers….
OMG, that looks awesome. Are they aubergine coloured or is it just the way the chocolate has photographed?
Insta filters! They are dark chocolate coloured…as was my face!
OMG!!! Where did your friend get the molds? I have been hunting them down ever since I saw that GBBO episode. I LOVE teacakes!
Amazon! I have to make them too, or The Husband may decamp to her house! Aren’t they just the best treat…and now there’s a grown up version.
The good news is these are 3 times bigger than Tunnocks…I die!
I will take a look. Thank you! I want to make them so bad.
Apparently they are very straightforward and definitely worth the effort. H went with a six hole mould which makes a sinfully large teacake. I recommend this! 😉
looking really yummy!
tasting really yummy too! 😉
Wowsers! They look devine! Daughter no 2 has been after trying all sorts of items from the BBB, and these are on her list. I guess I’m off to amazon then to get her some moulds!
I would. You won’t regret it if she makes these. I have two of the Bake Off books and hankering after the showstopper cake too!
They used to sell them in my primary school tuck shop and caramel wafers were a treat my grandmother used to buy…happy days!
Happy days indeed.
Not having grown up in the U.K. I have never heard Tunnocks Teacakes but the homemade ones your friend made look both beautiful and delicious. Congrats on finishing your degree!
You have so missed out. They are an institution over here. And rightly so. The homemade ones are even nicer, which I hadn’t thought possible.
Thanks for the congrats. I’m very glad it’s done. 😉
